The Best Bread and Butter Pickles

This is an old recipe that I inherited from my grandmother. She made these every summer when there was an abundance of cucumbers. I loved being with her especially in the kitchen and I’m so glad she had the patience to allow me to do so. So many people tell me not to share these recipes (especially my husband) but I feel selfish by not sharing. I tell them what if she hadn’t shared them with me?

Ingredients

  • 1 gallon of sliced unpeeled cucumbers (not too thin)
  • 6 onions sliced
  • 2 bell peppers sliced
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 5 cups sugar
  • 5 cups vinegar
  • 1 1/2 tsp. Turmeric
  • 2 TBSP Mustard Seed
  • 1/2 tsp. Ground Cloves
  • 1 tsp. Celery Seed

Instructions:

  • Put cucumbers, onions, bell peppers, and salt into a container and cover with ice.
  • Let stand for 3 hours and then drain.
  • Mix remaining ingredients with cucumbers and bring to full boil.
  • Remove from heat and put in sterilized jars.
  • Seal jars in water bath for 10 minutes.
